Rag Mag 26
What's up rag mag? World is absolutely insane and our unending support to all the people fighting against the fascist invasion taking place in Chicago and Portland and all over the U.S. right now. So many thoughts and so much is happening, but watching just how fucking incompetent and incapable these fascist pissbabies are is too fucking much, but the absurdity of watching out of shape cosplayers be mocked by dancing inflatable animals is something at least. Fight back, stay strong and solidarity forever.
This week's issue has Creature's Double Feature, Wasteland Chick, Splinters by Leela Corman, and new work from Sarah Heggan.
Hit us up at ragmagclub @ proton.me with flyers, art, feedback, column ideas, or just to say hi. We archived several columns and music reviews on the new site (rag-mag.ghost.io), so check it out.

Hog Punks Change the Channel - Sarah Heggan

Welcome back to Creature's Double Feature. Tigers on Vaseline played our first show last week and it was a blast. Nice to see so many friends and Erica Dawn Lyle's set was powerful and moving. Those vibes carried through the week and inspired me to finish up a new solo guitar piece I've been working on, called accept me as I am, recorded under my solo project Well Intended. Check it out if you want to. "off-putting but kind"

New exhibit is up at the speedshop for October called "invasive species"(romancing detritus) by Mary Lindberg. I really love the movement and flow in her work and she has some of my favorite pieces in the building infinity show. The cigarette case and lighter holder are so good! Just powerful and beautiful work.

I also grabbed a cool new fashion zine called Fashion3D, by AZN wizards FB1 and loveismydojo. It's a photo collage zine from a trip to Guangzhao, China in fall/winter 2024. Photos of fast fashion and bootleg clothing/stores. Fascinating zine filled with so much to look at. Every time I pick it up I noticed more weirdness and levels in this. The layout is really sick, totally maxed out and every inch of it in full color. Only info I have for how to get it is from the sign in the photo attached here, so try the speedshop.

Records of the week

First up is Boston band, Orange Whip. Their highly anticipated (at least by Creature) debut 7" is out as soon as the records arrive, but they put up 2 songs on Bandcamp as a preview. Been listening to them non-stop, especially Fake Ghost Video. That guitar lead has been stuck in my head since the last time I saw them. Super excited for the record to drop, but enjoy these songs in the meantime.

Since we are officially in spooky season, next up is a death rock band out of Sacramento named Screature. S-S records released their LP Four Columns about a decade ago, and I found a cheap used copy recently. Been spinning a lot and the haunting female vocals and post-punk/death rock vibes are strong on this one. Solid songwriting and varied tempos keep this one interesting. Rips.

Soul song of the day

Classic philly soul group The Intruders had a huge hit with Cowboys to Girls, but I always loved the b-side turn the hands of time. One of those singles you see everywhere but is actually worth spinning. Love it.
Wasteland Chick

Kids, be sure to stay in a non-exploded school and don’t do drain cleaner. Salutations, fellow Wasteland Chicks. Welcome back to another episode of “I can’t stop referencing Heathers”. Anyway, today we’ll be tackling with a ten-pound metal door the Heathers: The Musical, J.D.-heavy song “Meant to Be Yours”, which is, for those who haven’t seen the musical, the scene where J.D. wants Veronica to blow up Westerburg High and she fake hangs herself. I knew that loose was too noose! Anyway, let’s start with the rhythm and melody, which I give a 9 out of ten! The pacing is an incredible mix of a classical manipulative love tune and a high-steppin’ action number, which feels a bit jarring until you realize that it’s definitely on purpose! The jarring changes are much like J.D. himself as a character; sweet and soft one minute, but once he goes deeper into psychopath mode, he becomes angry and forcing. Just-just Wow! Moving along, on the other hand, I give the lyrics a 10 out of ten! First of all, I love the progression of J.D. singing about his nefarious plan into random bursts of a “sweet” love song, which really shows how desperate he is to convince Veronica to help. I also love the random “pew pew pew”’s J.D. does when he’s describing the school blowing up. Like- bro’s describing insane psychopath plans and then just- pew pew pew 😀! I also just love the way he sings “And so I built a bomb!” Like, he sings it in a way where it just sounds like an excited scream of “I built a bomb :D!” Finally, I love the almost addictive nature of the lyrics, they’re pretty perfect to just listen to on loop for hours! Overall review time!: I give this song a 10 out of ten, the rhythm and melody are spooky and ballodic, the lyrics are delicious and terrifying, and it has a great balance of humor and fear. Don’t forget that the dinosaurs will turn to dust, fellow Wasteland Chicks. See ya!
Sincerely, Wasteland Chick
