Soul Song of the Day by Creature
All Soul Songs of the Day from Creature's Double Feature
Creature’s soul song of the day is Judy Clay’s You Busted My Mind. Classic. “Baby to think that you could be so unkind, turn me off, turn me on, you busted my mind….you did.”
Creature’s soul song of the day is the legendary Bettye Swann’s - don't you ever get tired (of hurting me). “ Baby, you make me cry all the time. You′d be the happiest man alive if you could drive me…Stone out of my mind”
Creature’s soul song of the day is Nothing Takes The Place of You by Touissant McCall. The rawness of his voice just moves me.
Last up is Creature’s soul song of the day. Sometimes you love a song because you misheard a lyric and really loved it, only to realize that you’re just a dummy. Which brings us to What Now by Gene Chandler. The first few times I heard this song, my brain heard “holding in my beer and fighting off my tears” instead of “holding in my fears”. Still kinda like my misheard version better but song rules.
Soul song of the day - Alvin Robinson - Searchin'. Not really much to say about this one. Catchy beat and a good voice and sometimes that is all you need.
Soul song of the day is Try Me by Syl Johnson. I don't think there is a single song I've heard by Syl Johnson where he wasn't pushing it over the top. Always 100% from this guy. Killer.
Soul song of the day is going to continue the global and local them, so going with a great song from one of Providence’s own soul singers, Freddie Scott - Are you lonely for me?
Soul song of the week is Getting Mighty Crowder by Betty Everett. Classic.
Soul song of the week is Just a Little Taste by the legend Tommy Hunt. Classic.
Soul song of the week is Joe Haywood’s Say You Will. What a voice. Sometimes that’s all you need to make a good song.
Soul song of the week is Hey Lonely by Helen Jones. Another obscure singer with just a few credits that I can find. I love how this one keeps escalating and pushing more and more. That final break is so fucking good.
Soul song of the week is Sticky Sticky by Bobby Harris. This feels like a producer jamming two songs together with its bubblegum chorus, but when it works, it works.
Soul song of the week is Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson’s 1968 Here With Me. Great b-sider where she really goes for it on the chorus.
Soul song of the week is the banger Want Ads by Honey Cone. Just an all-timer. When they get to the extra extra line, Mr. Mittens always makes a little fist. So good.
Soul song of the week is Do You See My Love (For You Growing) by Jr Walker & the All Stars. One of my favorite songs from their “Smooth and mellow” period. First got turned onto this song by the excellent cover on the Dirtbombs - Ultraglide in Black covers album. What a groove on this one.
Soul song of the week is Slop Time by The Sherrys. Sometimes you just wanna dance and do the slop. I dig it.
Soul song of the week is That’s a Promise by Helen Bryant. This is the only record that I know of that Helen Bryant recorded and it is a goddamn shame because her voice is wonderful. I’m gone, gone gone gone gone gone…..and that’s a promise.

Soul song of the week is Talkin’ ‘Bout Jone’s by Bobby Jone’s. The only thing I ever really learn about Jone’s from this is that he can qualify. I love all the little accents over this one and the backing vocals are a nice touch.

Soul song of the day is the 1971 hit clean up woman by Betty wright. Recorded for the Alston label at the age of 17, goddamn she had a voice. Spun this during my set at Myrtle and had multiple people asking what it was, so picking this week cuz this song is an all timer and people need to remember. The guitar playing by Little Beaver is stellar.

Soul song of the day Frankie Karl and the dreams don't be afraid (do as I say). Group outta DC that released a couple of singles. Potentially questionable lyric content aside, just a good tune and an excellent, raw performance.
Soul song of the day is the b-side to Bill Withers biggest hit Lean on Me. The flip is called Better off Dead, tonally opposite of the aside and was big surprise the first time I spun this one. Hell of a song.

Soul song of the week is the Northern Soul hit hey girl don't bother me by the tams, named after the hats they all wore on stage. So goofy, but I love this song and this video of them later in their career in red leather outfits rules.

Soul song of the day is a nice slow one from the legendary Johnnie Mae Matthews, the godmother of detroit soul and one of the first black women to own their own record label. She cut a few records, but my fave song of hers is My Man (Sweetest Man in the World). Slow, bluesy, and just the power of her voice. Beautiful.

Outta late 60's Baltimore, Joe Graves had a few good records, but my favorite has got be his Rack records release "It's got to be for real". I love when people go for it, and man, when he hits that got to be for real about halfway through, he fucking went beyond it.
Soul song of the day

I was digging at the flea market a couple weeks back and found a pretty clean copy of the northern soul classic Nothing but a Heartache by The Flirtations which I grabbed for a friend. Of course it made me spin this record over and over. Here's the official video. The best.
Soul song of the day

Classic philly soul group The Intruders had a huge hit with Cowboys to Girls, but I always loved the b-side turn the hands of time. One of those singles you see everywhere but is actually worth spinning. Love it.
