Welcome to Rag Magazine Issue 1

Hey Punk, are you on the rag? Your pal Creature here introducing the first issue of Rag Magazine. We're a group of mostly Southern New England based punks, artists, musicians, filmmakers, tattooists, freaks, hockey enthusiasts and general weirdos looking to spread the word about our local underground sub-culture through writing, reviews, and event listings. We are always looking for contributors and events to list, so let us know. See ya next time, now read below for some of our regular columns. First up, Lost and Found by our friend Lindsay interviewing some guy named jeff poot about an item he lost.

  • Tell us about the item you lost (or found)—what’s the backstory?

it was a Buzzcocks shirt. The white shirt that usually say The Buzzcocks Are Coming. But it didnt say "are coming". i forget where i got it but I probably got it in 1999 or 2000. We played a show in Lynn in 2001. I used to sweat really hard (gross!) at shows so I'd always bring a spare shirt to change into.

  • Where and when did you realize the item was lost (or found)?

When I got home! I was bummed.

  • Was there a specific song or moment in the show when you think it got lost?

No but I bet some shitty aka wicked sick suburban punk band was playing at the time.

  • What’s the weirdest or most interesting thing about the venue or gig where it happened?

Um probably this story. I don't think it was that great of a show or anything. That band PLAN A PROJECT played. I bet they're from Long Island. I knew them from comps.

  • Did you go back to look for it? How did that go?

Ew no way

  • If you could give a message to whoever found (or lost) this item, what would you say?

You know that part in Silence of the Lambs when Catherine Martin's mom (25 year old daughter of senator Ruth Martin) goes on TV and pleads for the return of her daughter? It would probably look something like that. Did you know that the actor who plays Catherine Martin was one of the WARZONE WOMEN? Look it up

  • What’s the most sentimental or irreplaceable thing about this item?

I could easily replace it, but Tom told me you can't wear white t shirts after the age of 30, and he half invented pogo punk, so I trust him on this.

  • How would you describe your relationship with this item before it got lost (or after you found it)?

I rather liked it

  • If the item could talk, what story would it tell about your time together?

The time I wore it when I got my picture taken for the Best Hair superlative in my yearbook. The woman who took the photo (they hired actual photographers for this because it was a different time) had a cool mod haircut, and im like 90% sure she gave me "the nod" when she saw my shirt.

  • What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever found or lost at a show?

One time Jaan and Dan both lost their glasses at the SAME TIME at the DILLINGER FOUR show, but then it turned out their glasses were in their front pockets. WEIRD RIGHT?

  • Did losing this item change anything about how you experience shows now?

I think I stopped changing my shirt after shows. Cause like who cares and being stinky is cool.

  • Was the crowd or show vibe in any way connected to why the item got lost or found?

Hmm i don't know. I bet it was in the summer. I bet the crowd had a lot of DREXEL shirts. Remember DREXEL?.

  • What’s your favorite memory involving this item before it got lost (or after it was found)?

The yearbook photo probably. I love being stinky.

Creature's Double Feature

Creature here again. Bringing you interviews with two of my favorite local bands (and featuring contributors to this very mag), Whyte Lipstick and Orange Whip. Let's get right into it and come check them out Saturday 2/8 at Myrtle in East Providence!

Whyte Lipstick is a newer band featuring members of Electric Street Queens and Loretta. Fun, leather jacket punk from an all woman band. Here's a quick interview with bassist/vocalist Coco (editor’s note: interview questions courtesy of the March 2021 issue of Wet Cement. Hey Marcus. Hey Jeff.)

Photo stolen from the internet.

RM: What's up Marcus? WL: Hey Creature, My names actually Coco I thought you knew that. RM: We just watched Mystic Pizza. Listening to any good records recently? No lying. What's the last shit you listened to? WL: Again that wasn’t me, but now i want pizza - you buying? Hmmm, since David Lynch’s devastating passing I’ve been in a real lynch wormhole and listening to a lot of his music specifically his record “ Crazy Clown Time.” Angelo Badalementi is also always on heavy rotation with me. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Johnny Thunders and Dead Moon. RM: What's up with the firemen? Also earlier, did you mean you were hanging out with actual dogs or like people? WL: Not sure if the fireman is a inuendo so I’m gonna skip that. When I say dogs I mean dogs. In a ideal world I would be followed by a legion of tiny chihuahuas. Its good to have goals. RM: Holy shit! That's so weird!! Is it good? Send me a YouTube later or something. How's the dog doing? WL: ? RM: Well that fucking stinks. But at least you didn't do nothing. What's up with the BMX you got? Break any bones yet? WL: Oh, I actually don’t have a BMX. But I do have a cool old kids cruiser called the sears “ Spyder”. Its bubble gum pink with streamers. I love it so much. So , if you see me bombing around on that, get out of my way. But seriously get out of my way because it only has a coaster break. RM: Hey remember the other day when we listened to our old band and texted each other about it? That was awesome. WL: Well , creature again your mistaken we’ve never played in the same band . However we played a show together this summer at AS220 and both showed up in the same exact outfit which was wild. Cosmic faux pas? Or cosmic cool ? I’ll let the people decide. RM: Hey well listen man. I'm getting pretty fucking sick of your attitude, so I'm going to wrap this up. Any closing words? WL: Yeah yeah yeah its about time to wrap this up. Come see Whyte Lipstick at Myrtle saturday feb 8! We’re playing with friends Orange Whip , Leatherrax and DJ It’s Casual! Its gonna be a real cool time .Come support your local bar and musicians!

Orange Whip is another great new band featuring members of Funeral Cone, Ancient Filth, and too many others to mention. Catchy songs, best drummer in the game, and killer lyrics by Parz. Here's an interview with Kelley (vocals).

RM: What's up Marcus? OW: Hey what’s up! RM: We just watched Mystic Pizza. Listening to any good records recently? No lying. What's the last shit you listened to? OW: Oooof, ok, that Velly Jonas 7” is on a lot in our house. I don’t love Mystic Pizza the movie, but if you ever want to chat about Mystic Pizza the pizza parlor I’m here for it. RM: What's up with the firemen? Also earlier, did you mean you were hanging out with actual dogs or like people? OW: The firemen are ok. They do a hard day's work and at least aren’t cops. Why would you ever be a cop when you could be a fireperson instead? You get to hang out with dogs. Good dogs, too. RM: Holy shit! That's so weird!! Is it good? Send me a YouTube later or something. How's the dog doing? OW: The dog is a good dog, like I said. All Dogs are good dogs, all dogs go to heaven. RM: Well that fucking stinks. But at least you didn't do nothing. What's up with the BMX you got? Break any bones yet? OW: Well, it’s Cory’s BMX technically and I think it’s a pretty sick one because Cory tends to have excellent taste in sick shit. I think the rubber plastic things (shocks I think? sorry, I’m not a bike doctor) are busted. Still cool though. RM: Hey remember the other day when we listened to our old band and texted each other about it? That was awesome. OW: No, I do not remember that but I DO remember last time I was over your house JAAN and I went to make myself a drink at your liquor cart and every single liquor bottle had exactly one sip left in it. It made me so anxious that I left the room. RM: Hey well listen man. I'm getting pretty fucking sick of your attitude, so I'm going to wrap this up. Any closing words? OW: It’s ok. Come to over my house and watch dumb movies with me, yeah?

Records of the day for your ol’ pal Creature are new records by Alvilda and Tiikeri. Hot new 45 by Finnish punk band Tiikeri -Tee se itse E.P. Their name means tiger and they play ferociously catchy punk. No distortion and it still totally works. Self-released because DIY rules. I got mine from General Speech and you probably can too.

Also, been listening non-stop to the new Alvilda LP C'est Déjà L'heure out on Static Shock. All woman French band playing catchy punk/indie sounds with 60s style girl group harmonies. As John Brannon would say, check it out.

Creature’s soul song of the day is Judy Clay’s You Busted My Mind. Classic. “Baby to think that you could be so unkind, turn me off, turn me on, you busted my mind….you did.”

WASTELAND CHICK

Everybody’s a critic, but hey, so am I. So let’s critique something cool: Punk music my dad likes. Just a warning: There’s going to be some opinion coming at you, so watch out! Anyway, I’ve grown up with this stuff, as my parents are very cool and weird, so I’m used to cool weird punk songs. The song this Wasteland Chick will be reviewing today is Drop Dead by Siege. I give this song a 7.9 out of ten. It has good guitar beats and the general melody is very good. It feels audibly exciting, like it evokes a feeling of excitement when you hear it, like a song you play in the car on your way to a rave or party. The music itself is very good, like there’s excitement worked into the melody. The lyrics are a bit confusing; It kind of sounds like people shouting about stuff, but I think that’s the point. It sounds like a group of people screaming and having fun with sick guitar riffs. My final review: 7.9 out of ten. Lyrics are a bit confusing, but the music itself is very good, and evokes excitement in listeners. Would definitely play this song while driving to a party, or just sitting in the parlor eating breakfast and reading.

Signed, WASTELAND CHICK
